That line is from a 2014 video he recorded as a comedian, before he entered politics: he said he’d kneel so Ukraine itself wouldn’t be put on its knees. In the 2019 debate he called the quote out of context and knelt on stage to honor families of soldiers killed in Donbas — not Putin. He did meet Putin in Paris later that year.
