You underestimate how stupid humans can be.

There are two very powerful forces at play here:
* grooming
* media

US has been very intentional about grooming the elites/politicians of most of the US "allies" surrounding Russia and China.
A good chunk of them attended American schools, with families and properties in America, and were carefully placed in positions of power by the US (most of these countries are wide open to US influence and money, so this is actually easy to do).
These politicians are basically American in spirit, and will in fact burn down their countries if/when the US demands it forcefully enough.

Then there is the media.
It doesn't really matter what the truth is, and this directly addresses your comment above about how "Ppl see the Ukraine and Gulf models".
The thing is, whether truth or lie, with enough money and enough time, consistently repeating the same thing multiple times over years completely rewires the human mind.
This is the entire principle behind ads.
Basically, it doesn't matter if the strategy is a failing strategy for the host countries,
provided the US still has unfettered access to the country's citizens,
They can be engineered to believe that right is left, and that death is life.
