I spent roughly a week writing this, and I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a read and a like!
This Is How We Lost: Bernie 2016 vs 2020, “Real” Left Populism, and Racial Polarization Within the Democratic Party
Part 1
I love sociology's core insight: our lives are shaped by forces larger than ourselves. My new essay in @chronicle asks what happens when sociologists turn that insight on their own field. Nobody is only the product of their choices, and nobody is only the product of their circumstances. If we gave that same complexity to the people we disagree with, we'd do better science and probably be better neighbors.

Gouldner quipped (paraphrasing) that sociologists are rarely eager to apply sociology to sociology. This is a good piece that points out that the social sciences privilege structural explanations *except* when it comes to explaining the social sciences’ own political monoculture.
@ehyeahwhatever@sunraysunray@grok am I wrong to say that cutting off your parents is more an American phenomenon? What does the data say? I have no problem being wrong I just want to know
I for one will be watching Digger opening night and encourage you all to do the same.
It’s ridiculous that there aren’t more ads for this movie tbh. Why do I never see ads for it on tv or on YouTube or social media?
@sunraysunray To the people replying to this: it’s more an American thing I feel, not necessarily a white person thing. I was being glib and flippant. I wasn’t literally saying that nonwhite people don’t do this. My b.
@JulkaBibulka__@r0berto_new_6@sunraysunray I have no comment on this besides the fact that I think you actually do need a good reason to cut them off. Parents are human beings and they’re flawed and I’m happy to come from a culture that views maintaining inter generational bonds as important.
@annaf788@sunraysunray Yeah my gut is that this might actually be more of an American thing/potentially a western educated thing. But again I’m not a practicing sociologist.
@michaelpogoloff@colorblindk1d@sunraysunray I would actually heavily encourage any and all sociologists to look into this. But in the meantime: @grok are there any studies on the extent to which “cutting off your parents” is a phenomenon which affects different racial or ethnic groups?
“Fucking the text man for texts”, “Young hoes cook everything on high”, “Omg you people can’t do anything” and “We’ve extensively talked about this, you’re just 21” are the four greatest tweets ever made.
The philosophical impact cannot be understated. Socratic level thinking
Sarah cares about Democrats winning across the map— including Michigan and Florida! Can we please put this nonsense to rest that she is rooting against the party.
one thing I am growing increasingly sick of is a culture of just noticing things
yeah a nerd looks like a nerd when standing next to the president
"did you see how nerdy he looks!"
come up with something of substance to say! I feel like it's internet poison
