🚨🇵🇹 𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬: Explaining the TENSION and everything that has happened between Cristiano Ronaldo, Jorge Jesus and the Portuguese National Team:
• After admitting he had considered retiring from international football following the World Cup, Cristiano revealed that he spoke with both FPF president Pedro Proença and Jorge Jesus... And that they told him they still COUNTED ON HIM.
• Cristiano started Jorge Jesus’ first competitive match in charge against Wales and played around 70 minutes before being substituted. Portugal won 1-0... Then came the match against NORWAY.
• Jorge Jesus decided NOT to start Cristiano vs. Norway. Before the game, he explained that Ronaldo had played almost 70 minutes only three days earlier and that he did not believe it made sense for the 41-year-old to start two matches so close together. Jesus nevertheless insisted: "We want Ronaldo on the pitch."
• The important part: As per multiple reports, Ronaldo was then told that, despite starting on the bench, he was expected to ENTER during the match.
• Jorge Jesus later revealed that he had actually agreed with Cristiano that he would play roughly the FINAL 30 MINUTES... Ronaldo even WARMED UP expecting to come on. But Cristiano NEVER entered the game.
• Jorge Jesus explained afterwards that “the game was dictating other things.” Gonçalo Ramos was playing well, had scored and had another goal disallowed, so Jesus decided there was no reason to replace him with a striker of Cristiano’s characteristics.
• Jesus stressed that the decision was NOT because Cristiano was physically unable to play: “He was in condition to play for as long as I wanted.” It was purely a technical/tactical decision.
• Cristiano therefore spent the ENTIRE 90 MINUTES on the bench despite having warmed up and expected to enter.
• His reaction immediately attracted attention. As soon as the final whistle went, Ronaldo went DIRECTLY down the tunnel instead of joining the rest of his teammates in going towards the Portugal supporters to thank them.
• Jorge Jesus was asked about Cristiano’s reaction and said he had not noticed it during the match, adding: “I have to talk to him.”
• Portuguese media then began reporting that Cristiano was NOT HAPPY with the way the situation had been handled.
• The issue was reportedly not simply that Cristiano Ronaldo had been left out of the starting XI, but that the plan communicated to him had CHANGED: he expected to play, warmed up to play, and ultimately received zero minutes.
• The situation then became even bigger when Cristiano did NOT train normally with the rest of the Portugal squad days after the game, and returned to Portugal’s hotel.
• The Portuguese FA said Ronaldo returned to the hotel to complete a specific GYM programme because the stadium did not have one of the pieces of equipment required for his individual session. Jorge Jesus has also publicly denied that Ronaldo refused to train.
• Nevertheless, because all of this came immediately after the Norway controversy, the Portuguese media began treating the situation as a genuine TENSION between Cristiano and Jorge Jesus.
• Things became serious enough that Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença changed his plans and travelled to Scandinavia, with reports describing his presence as an attempt to mediate and understand the situation surrounding the captain.
• Pedro Proença arrived in Copenhagen after midnight, so the President, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus then held a FACE-TO-FACE conversation.
• After that meeting, reports in Portugal initially suggested that everything had been RESOLVED. Both sides reportedly left the conversation satisfied and focused on Portugal’s upcoming games.
• Jorge Jesus then publicly tried to completely PLAY DOWN the controversy. Jesus said the supposed problem “wasn’t even a problem.”
• Jesus also insisted that although Cristiano’s legendary status means he deserves respect and communication, once a match begins the sporting decision belongs to the COACH: “In the team, I’m the one who decides.” He added that no player would change his tactical decisions.
• That public explanation was supposed to END the controversy. But according to the latest reports circulating from Portugal and Spain, the situation has EXPLODED AGAIN.
• Ronaldo has again been absent from normal group training, with the entire situation now being scrutinised because of the previous dispute and because there has been no reported physical injury preventing him from playing.
• Reports from MARCA now claim that the tension between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus resurfaced after Jesus publicly insisted there had effectively been “no problem,” while Cristiano reportedly believes there WAS a real issue that needed to be addressed.
• According to those reports, Cristiano has now LEFT the Portugal camp amid the renewed controversy.
• Cristiano himself said only DAYS AGO that the moment Portugal, Jorge Jesus or the FPF no longer truly count on him, he will simply “take my bag and leave.”
• Now, after being promised minutes against Norway but remaining on the bench, the disagreement over how the situation was handled, multiple days without normal group training, intervention from the FPF president and contradictory public messaging, Cristiano’s FUTURE with Portugal is suddenly in serious doubt.
• MARCA has now raised the possibility that Cristiano Ronaldo could even decide to RETIRE FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL, potentially bringing one of the longest and most historic international careers in football history to an abrupt END.
What began with Cristiano Ronaldo simply NOT playing against Norway has now developed into a major dispute involving a decision over whether Cristiano Ronaldo will EVER play for Portugal again. 🇵🇹
