Katlego, an N4 Engineering student at Westcol TVET College’s Carletonville Campus, was brutally raped and murdered in her student accommodation room. She was found lifeless with multiple stab wounds, particularly to the neck, and her body was wrapped in bedsheets.
The caretaker of the accommodation was quickly arrested and charged with rape and murder. He has appeared multiple times in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court. The case has been postponed several times, referred to the High Court, and remained ongoing into early 2026, with her family expressing frustration over the delays.
The tragedy sparked memorials and tributes from her family, fellow students, SASCO (South African Students Congress), and women’s rights groups, who highlighted issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and safety in student housing.
