Tengriism is indeed experiencing a recognizable renaissance within the Turkic world. However, this is less a widespread return to a unified religion than an increasing return to the pre-Islamic spiritual and cultural roots of the Turkic peoples. Especially since the end of the Soviet Union, this interest has grown in Central Turan. A current scientific study from 2025 explicitly describes a revival of neo-tengris movements, especially in Turkic Kazakhstan, Turkic Tatarstan, Turkic Sakha, Turkic Altai and Turkic Kyrgyzstan.

In Kazakhstan, Tengri is increasingly part of a discussion about national identity, historical memory and cultural independence. For some people, Tengri stands less for the founding of a new religion than for the rediscovery of one's own spiritual tradition, which is older than Islam, Christianity and other religions that later entered the region. Research also sees this as a reaction to globalization and the desire to formulate a more independent cultural identity.

Tengriism also has a visible history in Kyrgyzstan. Since the 1990s, organizations and movements have emerged there that consider Tengri as part of an original Kyrgyz or Turkic identity.

It is also interesting that the Renaissance is not limited to today's states of Central Turan. Tengrist or neo-Tengrist ideas are also resonated with parts of the Turkic Tatars, Turkic Bashkirs, Turkic Tuwins, Turkic Sakha, Buryats and other peoples of the Eurasian area. Historical and cultural elements are partially reinterpreted and combined with modern ethnic identity.

Tengriism is therefore today less a uniform religion than a growing cultural-spiritual current within the Turkic world. For some it means a return to an original religion, for others a philosophical view of life and for others above all a symbol of connection to the ancient Turks, the steppe, forest, mountain, river, nature and the sky.

One could therefore describe today's development as a spiritual search for one's own roots:

Tengri – the Eternal Father Sky – once again becomes a symbol of origin, closeness to nature, freedom and the shared memory of the Turkic world.
