Some are mothers carrying children, families leaving livelihoods behind and starting over after xenophobic unrest forced them to return home from South Africa.
Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Haruna Kasolo says the returnees will be taken to a reception centre, where they are expected to meet President Museveni, receive assistance from NIRA to restore or obtain identification documents, and be enrolled in government reintegration programmes, including SACCOs and agricultural livelihood initiatives.
