A botanical conservation programme for north-west England. Funding from Chester Zoo, Lancs Wildlife Trust and the Wild Flower Society. Founded by @joshual951
I may have split my trousers in the process, but I’ve now completed this year’s monitoring surveys for nationally ‘Endangered’ Great Sundew (Drosera anglica) across Greater Manchester.
From 10 plants re-established last year, there are now 43!! 😍🥳
@ecology_cymru@botany_beck Perhaps you ought to direct your aggression to those unscrupulous foragers where it might be more warranted. @Matt_J_ecology, Rebecca and others’ records have brought this site’s attention to the fore of a local authority and certainly do not deserve your criticism. 🌱
Since 2017, we’ve been working SO hard to restore rare & extinct plant populations in the region bit by bit, almost all on designated sites.
How is anyone supposed to see nature recover when bodies like @NENorthWest set up to protect nature actively sanction its destruction?🌱💔
Five years ago, I was lucky enough to be involved in the reintroduction of White Beak-sedge to Greater Manchester after not being seen in the area for 200 years. From three small clumps, there are now hundreds of thousands of plants! Wowza. 😍🌱
Spent a fab day volunteering with @joshual951 of the North-west Rare Plant Initiative translocating Papillose Bog-moss (Sphagnum papillosum) to a degraded @Lancswildlife bog in Greater Manchester to assist in its restoration #bryophytes#Sphagnum@nwrpi#peatlands
What’s that? You didn’t know @chesterzoo funded AMAZING, urgent, rare plant conservation work right here in the UK by @nwrpi & that it’s been recognised and published in @CIEEMnet ? oh catch up 😉 #PreventingExtinction
Great 🧵 on the dire situation.Thu our work @chesterzoo we’ve been supporting @nwrpi incredible work on the @Lancswildlife Manchester Mosslands & at the zoo we have been breeding rare Large Heath butterflies for release on this precious habitat. Go #peatfree for wildlife 🦋🌱🌍
Fab to see #TubularWaterDropwort doing so well at this time of year at #RawcliffeMeadows one of @PondRiverStream #FlagshipPonds sites. Find out more about this fascinating urban pond site and TWD https://t.co/6X16ZIKRPA
It's 9 wins for us in this year's @BIAZA Awards!🏅
Our work on a diverse set of projects has been recognised as among the best, ranging from long-term lion behavioural monitoring, to using hormones in breeding Omani blind cavefish 🦁🌱🦎🐟

Wigan’s grasslands are so good, that we’ve been targeting some for the reintroduction of long extinct plants like Dyer’s Greenweed and Green-winged Orchid! 🌱❤️
What @Lancswildlife and @WiganCouncil have achieved for their urban grassy spaces over the past two decades is nothing short of astounding! Here’s a short vid I did to showcase some of their amazee grasslands: https://t.co/aK16054P0l
We reintroduced this fantabulous wee beastie to the @CheshireWT Holcroft Moss just over two years ago, and it’s increased by over 8-fold in that time! YAY!
There’s been another drastic increase in reintroduced White Beak-sedge (Rhynchospora alba) this year - this time, at the @CheshireWT managed Holcroft Moss! 🤩🎊
He certainly is a man on a mission and we @chesterzoo & @ScienceatCZ are VERY proud to be supporting Josh’s work through the @nwrpi it’s one of our key UK field programmes, have a read below 👇#UKwildlife#Mosslands
There was also a 3-fold increase in plants of Endangered Great Sundew (Drosera anglica) at this secret @CheshireWT managed site after its reintroduction last year! YAY!!
OH MY GOD!!
After >150 years of extinction, reintroduced Oblong-leaved Sundew (Drosera intermedia) has seen over a 7-fold increase on this @Lancswildlife reserve including lots of young plants and babies!!! YAY!!!🌱❤️
Just turned on the telly and imagine my surprise when the first thing on is @joshual951 of @nwrpi on @BBCCountryfile spreading the good word about planting native wildflowers! #goals#ecology
