MEET IO MAKANDAL

Ecological artist from South Africa, Io Makandal (@iomakandal) works with plants, fungi, soil, and effective micro-organisms as active collaborators in her practice. Using non-invasive, nature-based interventions, her work explores organic transformation, ecological restoration, and our deep relationship with the environment.

As an artist in residence for Soil & Water: Kigali Crossing, @iomakandal has been inspired by Nyandungu Eco-Park, Kigali, inviting audiences to co-create Bokashi mud balls infused with beneficial micro-organisms to help naturally restore and digest toxins in the park's waterways.

Soil & Water: Kigali Crossing exhibition is open at Nyandungu Eco-Park until March 2027, prepared by Nirox Foundation in partnership with Nyandungu Eco-Park.

Early this morning we took an incredible group on a 4 km hike through the park, learning and laughing as we went, with lots of questions along the way, all while soaking in the deep, lush green around us. We finished with a gentle, still yoga session right under the bamboo trees, and it was pure magic. Everyone got a moment to pause and breathe together, and we left feeling truly grounded.

Moments like this, brought together by @livewellrwanda, show what happens when a community gets moving in nature. 💚🌿

This afternoon, we spent time exploring the wetlands with students from Remera Academy.
As we walked alongside the ponds, the group learned how swamp ecosystems naturally filter water and observed the incredible variety of bird species living throughout the park. While textbooks explain ecological functions, seeing a restored wetland in action helps build a personal connection to the landscape reminding us why caring for our environment starts with understanding it firsthand.

Earlier today, students from E.P. Munini, E.P. Jurwe, E.P. Cyaruzinge, and G.S. Kanombe joined us for a morning session in the park to connect directly with the living landscape. Walking the wetlands and ponds, they learned about environmental conservation, observed how swamps naturally filter water, and discovered the diverse bird species that call the park home. Science teaches us how these ecosystems work, but moments like this remind us that nature is not just a resource, but the very rhythm of our shared life.
