A game didn't turn out bad because bad devs worked on it. Amazing devs work on bad games all the time and 90+% of the decisions that led to that were outside of their control.
There are only so many projects in a career - no dev hopes to be a part of a bad one. But it happens.
Don't listen to Notch kids.
If you can get a government grant for game development, TAKE IT. If you're frugal, it can allow you to self-publish and if you're clever it can be leveraged to get even larger investments.
Government grants tend to be pretty no-strings-attached in terms of retaining creative control and ownership (compared to many publishers). The downside is that it tends to come with a lot of book-keeping BUT in many cases, this often represent business-practices that you maybe SHOULD be doing in any case (budgeting?).

Consider me charmed.
