Pope Leo XIV’s doctors have confirmed that the tumor removed on October 13 was a lung adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized.

Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said on Wednesday evening that a subsequent oncological assessment has confirmed that “no further treatment is necessary.”

Voting season is coming! 🗳️

Through our Disagree Without Disrespect campaign, Archbishop Hicks reminds us of the importance of civility in public discourse. As Catholics, we should take his words to heart as we prepare to vote, listening respectfully to others, engaging in meaningful conversations, and prayerfully considering the candidates and issues.

Following the news that Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital for lung adenocarcinoma, @NYSCatholicConf's Dennis Poust urged Catholic New Yorkers to ask for Our Lady of Good Counsel’s intercession.

[Secretary Marco Rubio @SecRubio]

Jeanette and I are united in prayer for @PONTIFEX’s health following his recent diagnosis.

May the Lord give him strength and the Holy Spirit guide the medical professionals taking care of the Holy Father.

[NYS Catholic Conference @NYSCatholicConf]

“The prayers of Catholic New Yorkers and all people of good will are with the Holy Father during this health trial. We are grateful for his surgical team and for the post-operative care he is receiving. Reflecting his Augustinian roots, the Pope has a particular devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel, and we humbly ask her intercession as we pray for his full and complete recovery." - @DennisPoust, executive director

[Archbishop Ronald Hicks @AbpNewYork]

We thank God that the surgery on Pope Leo was, by all accounts, successful, and that he continues his recovery and recuperation. I know that I join with people from all corners of @ny_arch, across the country, and around the world in keeping the Holy Father in our prayers.

Pope Leo XIV's surgery was successful and he is recuperating, though a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma (a type of lung cancer) has been confirmed. Please pray for the Holy Father's full recovery.

Pope Leo XIV underwent thoracic surgery at Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, as planned, according to a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora released by the Holy See Press Office.

The surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung, and tissue examined during the operation confirmed the diagnosis of “lung adenocarcinoma,” as suspected from tests conducted beforehand.

The Pope was in the operating room approximately three hours, while the operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. The doctors said it was successful and there were no complications.

Pope Leo awoke normally after surgery and, following a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, according to the statement.

I am taking the last 100 steps before entering the city of Santiago de Compostela. I have felt Jesus walking with me every step of the way. Buen Camino and God bless you!

[Archbishop Ronald Hicks @AbpNewYork]

I was blessed to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela after completing the Camino. Though challenging at times, I felt your prayers along the way. I return home grateful for this journey.

Please pray for the Holy Father.

Pope Leo XIV has said his doctors have found “a localized nodule” in his lung and will operate in a few days.

Speaking at the Angelus on Sunday, he said the nodule was “detected at a very early stage and is well localized.”

The Pope added that his doctors recommend surgery and that he will follow their advice, with the surgery scheduled for the coming days.

Pope Leo thanked everyone for their spiritual closeness and entrusted himself to our prayers.

“Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, doctors found a localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized. The doctors believe surgery is appropriate. Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it. The operation is already scheduled for the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.”

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty
