Hitting the road for the long holiday weekend? Be sure to slow down and savor the final days of summer.

Through the Labor Day, law enforcement officers will be increasing patrols, looking for speeding, impaired and reckless drivers.

If you’re planning to party, be responsible and have a safe and sober ride home. If you’re in a hurry, remember that a few miles per hour over the speed limit can have lifetime consequences.

Buckle up, slow down, have a plan and enjoy the journey.

The summer heat is still in full swing, causing cars to become hot and dangerous if left unattended. As a reminder, always double-check your car before you lock it and make sure children know NOT to get into cars without an adult. Call 911 immediately if you see a child alone in a locked car.

In an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and speed related crashes, @nysdmv Acting Commissioner and @NYSGTSC Chair Christian Jackstadt joined traffic safety partners and law enforcement today to introduce a new billboard in Halfmoon, Saratoga County.

In New York, roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities involve speeding, mirroring national estimates where nearly 29% to 30% of crash deaths are speed-related. Billboards encouraging drivers to slow down have been placed along major roadways across the state.

During the first of two statewide speed week enforcement campaigns, which ran from June 8-14, 2026, law enforcement officers across the state issued 56,578 tickets including 14,005 for speeding, 2,220 for distracted driving and 1,386 for impaired driving. During the second speed week enforcement, which ran from August 3-9, 2026, another 58,815 tickets were issued including 16,246 for speeding, 1,971 for distracted driving and 1,527 for impaired driving.

Law enforcement officers from across the state issued more than 58,000 citations for reckless driving behavior during the second "Speed Week" of summer.

Last year 131,245 tickets were issued during the enforcement, including 4,125 arrests for impaired driving and 24,905 citations for speeding.
