Representation in gaming.

This is a complex topic that a lot of people have very strong feelings about. I'm not naive enough to think I am going to change anyone's mind about the topic with a post or anything, but I did want to share my experience with my daughter.

Both my wife and I play games, so as soon as my daughter was able, we let her play video games occasionally if she was interested. Sometimes she would watch me play, and then ask if she could play. I worked at Nintendo so I was playing a lot of titles in the DS/3DS and Wii/WiiU eras. The games she was the most interested in had a very clear pattern.

The first game she ever beat to completion by herself was Super Mario 3D World. She loved to play as Peach, and the unique floating she had made the game approachable for her. When she beat Bowser for the first time, she was so excited.

She also got pretty deep in Splatoon. Was fun watching her play online knowing that the people on the other side she splatted were being beat by an actual 8 year old girl lol. She would also play Fire Emblem on the DS, Mario Kart, etc. We even let her play Diablo 3 (yes I let my 8 year old play an M rated game). She would play a female mage, kill a few skeletons, and get new clothes to try on. We would explain that she wanted Intellect gear, but it didn't matter because the red dress was prettier. She would stop around level 22, but she had fun.

As she got older, I remember Mario Odyssey coming out. I freaking LOVE that game and think it's amazing. She would watch me for a bit, but when I asked if she wanted to play, she wasn't interested. She was pretty disappointed she couldn't play as her favorite character. So she played other games. At the time I think her and my wife were on a Sims3 bender.

If it wasn't obvious, my daughter only liked to play games that had character choices she liked. In games like Splatoon or Diablo you could make what you wanted. In Fire Emblem, she had a few characters that appealed to her so she kept playing it. Even with League of Legends, she would load up a bot game as Annie, her teammates Soraka, Sona, Irelia, and Teemo and beat a team of Sion and Chogath.

So when I was Nintendo, one of the things I did was push to include a Mini Peach toy, and later a Mini Rosalina. Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, etc. too of course, but wanted to make sure to include those. Because of that, she was able to enjoy those games I had worked on more.

Today, my wife and daughter are huge Genshin Impact nerds and each talk about their Husbando's. She also plays Roblox (which has weirdly turned her into a Sonic/Shadow/Amy fan??) and a few other games. So she's still gaming and her tastes haven't really changed that much.

All of this was simply to share my experience with my now 15 year old daughter. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind or make a big statement or anything. But for me and any game I work on, I'm going to try to find ways to make sure people like my daughter can enjoy the game without sacrificing the core vision of the game.
