Great to see our students @tuff_bickies and thomas stolberger getting credit for new discoveries. Even if @GeoscienceNZ president can't pronounce the species names! @EnvUoA
🎉 Yes! I am the 4th woman in ~49 years to win this prestigious award, where my prize is a public lecture tour of NZ. Many thanks to my nominators and @GeoscienceNZ ! Very much looking forward sharing the story of the Kaikōura Earthquake: Tales from the Seafloor. See ya in 2023!
This was a fun (& much-needed balanced) piece to write about the whale fossil taken from Karamea & the ethics of fossil collecting. Thanks to all those who helped. You know who you are. Please share widely. https://t.co/ieBY40Tbg7 via @ConversationEDU
Most people probably aren't aware that it's standard practice for @inaturalistnz observations adjacent to development sites to be referenced in resource consent applications now so if you want to make a real difference with how your local area develops get out and get observing.
Recently @CpgSthlm Nic Dussex, @michel_knapp & my @otago PhD student @Lubbe_P published the 1st paper from her doctoral research on #NewZealand wattlebird (kōkako, tīeke/saddlebacks, & huia) evolution - hint: their tupuna ancestors dispersed here. https://t.co/rEyvqQkLG9 1/7
Very cool find today hidden away in a decades-old bulk collection lot. Looks to be the periotic (inner ear bone) of a small dolphin. Not too sure the age - the collection was from Pliocene strata but apparently could have been reworked from underlying Miocene...
We are working w/ Māori & palaeos across #NZ's uni's, museums, CRI's & the Geol Soc NZ to come up with a shortlist to put to a public vote, & we'd like your thoughts on what #fossils should be on the shortlist. Maybe pupu whakarongotaua flax snail fossils (Photo by Kerry Walton).
Get behind this idea and retweet! This would be an awesome opportunity to promote and celebrate all the mahi that palaeontologists put into discovering and sharing Aotearoa's prehistoric past!
#NewZealand has a national bird, the kiwi, & a national plant, the silver fern, so why not a #fossil emblem from our remarkable fossil record epitomizing NZ. Now is your chance to have a say w/ our public campaign to choose one. Please RT: https://t.co/2N9iiPjI1L #FossilFriday
