I did a great interview on @radionz last night summarising and critiquing the #whitebait regulations proposed changes.

We shouldn't have to deal with such blatant sexism in this day and age. Nor should we let it distract us from the real topic: protecting our threatened native fish.
Smashing the patriarchy and saving the animals one Kumbaya at a time!

(1) They grow so fast! This a 1mm threatened #NZ E. aucklandica juvenile #freshwatermussel! Transformed on a fish during my lab study a few months ago! Check out that glochidia scar on the umbo (knob at top)-that's the size it was (100um) when it first attached to a ๐ @niwa_nz๐
READ: this article by @nznativefish in 2016 is more relevant than ever because DOC's review of whitebait management rules is happening right now, finally, and we need meaningful change to save our native fishes. https://t.co/JwWLTcgiGO
Bullies. Named for an abbreviation of a Anglicisation of a mishearing of Mฤori name. The original name could mean either any big fish, or a group of entirely unrelated fish... And bullies just happen to be grumpy sods.
Exciting find from yesterday's field work! A young (35mm) rare E. aucklandica #kฤkahi#freshwatermussel!! ๐๐ญ๐ฏ. E.A populations (esp in Waikato streams) are often dominated by older adults, like the tagged one below (98mm). So - this was a particularly rare and lovely moment.
