I was working as a hospital supervisor at a 100 bed facility. We were required to report all deaths or those with life threatening injuries to the organ procurement organization in the PNW.

We had a 23 yr old female that came in after a suicide attempt. She had designated organ donor on her license. I made the required call and the next thing I knew, the organ procurement team was at the bedside, chomping at the bit. They made it clear that they did not need the family’s approval to harvest since it was designated on her license.

Fortunately, our amazing ICU staff advocated for the patient and she went to rehab a week later. The term “brain dead” is a fictional term used to make organ harvesting seem ethical. I tell everyone to remove organ donor from their license and let your family know your wishes.”
