Oh, but it is PERFECTLY possible if you divide the people through religion and politics so they are busy fighting each other over the largely irrelevant while leaving the rulers free to impose their ever more extremist rule. Recruit your enforcers from the same target population in the form of the military, law enforcement and government/media hacks and you are home and dry.
The fact that it's so easy - history confirms - reveals the human disease of the ages ... naivety. Only when that is deleted do we have a chance.
