Trump's apparent victory has 5 big implications for the UK: 🧵
1️⃣ It can happen here. He will back Farage, the Musk propaganda machine will crank up against Labour; the Tories will remould themselves into Trump-lite Islamophobes ...
'They consider it work to sit in the Royal Box at Wimbledon - no one else on earth would.'
'Why do we fall for it? Why do we suck it up?'
Jonathan in Croxdale and @mrjamesob discuss the Royal Family, as it's revealed they take millions in rent from the NHS and armed forces.
@fergustp@PollyRendall@NHSMillion@C4Dispatches@thetimes Do they though? It would be interesting to see their tax returns. Oh, they don't disclose them. Funny that.
Look, it's OK to say 'I'm happy they don't play by the same rules because they are Royal', but let's not pretend it is anything else.
The Times splashes on the views of James Dyson who thinks the Budget is really unfair to people like him. That’s a billionaire who backed Brexit then moved his firm to Singapore - and owns more than 30k acres of UK farmland. But you wouldn’t know any of that from this article.
What a bizarre article
Public sector pensions disappear on death and cannot be bequests to kids, so the effective tax rate (if you insist on doing like this)…
…is 100%
The ‘typical 500-acre farm’ that’s referred to in this article is larger than 90% of all farms in England, going by the annual June Survey of Agriculture.

@fergustp@PollyRendall@NHSMillion@C4Dispatches@thetimes Funny how the justification on one hand tells us they're landlords / businesses like any other, but then we're told 'no they're not'.
That's gaslighting folks.

@NHSMillion I dislike everything the royal family stands for but I don’t see why they should be different to any other landlord - to get a reasonable return for the use of their land
@PollyRendall@NHSMillion@C4Dispatches@thetimes For the record, and for the person who wrote an essay in reply, my question is in response to those suggesting these are 'businesses run like any other'.
Clearly, they are not. And to include the part about the monarch voluntarily paying tax is laughable.
@jeremyiwhite@NHSMillion They don't pay capital gains tax or corporation tax. Don't hide behind the excuse "it's only a business" when they don't play by the rules everyone else has to.
