If I had to share one piece of advice to share with designers or any creative, it would be this:
Never depend on any marketplace to sell your products.
In June 2020, I joined Webflow as a template designer, and at first, everything felt great.
Template sales were strong and consistent. Revenue hovered at around $1300–$2900 per month for about 3-4 years.
Somewhere in my fourth year, things started to shift gradually:
– More designers (& agencies) flooded the market
– Competition increased dramatically
– I couldn't keep up the pace of new template releases
Then my revenue began to dip, little by little, until it completely fell below $500.
What made it worse was that I didn’t see it coming. Because each month, I always felt sales were going to creep back up.
But they never did.
My saving grace was that I somehow always had client work (which can sometimes be here and there as well).
Right now, I'm in the midst of building my own marketing channels to see if I can revive my sales.
But I have to say, the grind isn't pretty.
So if you are looking to sell templates or any digital product and make it sustainable and consistent,
My honest advice:
Build your own marketing channels.
