Transformers are here to stay for a while. Not because it’s the absolute best architecture, but because the staggering amount of resources lock us to the existing weights.

Starting another model evolution tree will literally burn forests to ground (CO2). You only train once.

In a sense, Transformers won the pretraining lottery. Big companies (OpenAI) have little economic incentive to deviate from their backbone model, and indie players can’t afford to train from scratch. Llama/OPT makes the commitment even stickier.

@gordoslair Still have mine. Fabulous, proud design. It’s sheer heft reminds me of some models of Sun workstations.
Limited by OS support. Failing ports and occasional power management crashes. Still use it occasionally, though. Miss it as a gentle room heater in winter :)

@werat It was an amazement to first discover Borland Turbo Pascal’s debugger.
While certainly sentimentality it’s has been difficult to find something as easy to use until fairly recently a la C# (I hate to say it)

(It is surprising that there is not a nice Erlang debugger)
