When we talk about the roots of American literature, the name Lucy Terry Prince rarely gets the spotlight it deserves, yet her story is one of the most remarkable records of early American resilience. Born in West Africa, Lucy was kidnapped as an infant and brought to Deerfield, Massachusetts, where she was enslaved by Ebenezer Wells. Despite the harsh realities of her bondage, her sharp mind and powerful voice were impossible to suppress. She eventually gained her freedom after marrying Abijah Prince, a prosperous free Black man who purchased her liberty, and together they built a life in Vermont, raising six children, including a son named Cesar who fought in the Revolutionary War.
What makes Lucy’s legacy so foundational is her oral ballad titled "Bars Fight," composed after a 1746 ambush in Deerfield. Passed down orally for over a century before being published in 1855, it stands as the oldest known piece of Black American literature. But her impact went far beyond her poetry. Lucy was a fierce orator and advocate. She famously delivered a three-hour speech to the trustees of Williams College attempting to enroll her son, and she later successfully argued a land dispute before the Vermont Supreme Court. She was a poet, a advocate, and a powerhouse long before those titles were readily granted to Black women, making her story essential to American history.
