Pelumi Onifade picked up a camera on October 24, 2020, and did the one thing Nigeria can never forgive a young journalist for. He told the truth on film.
He captured Olusegun Abiodun Bolarinwa, President of the Yoruba Youth Forum, firing a gun into a crowd of EndSARS protesters at Abule Egba. Live and Unedited which no one can deny. The footage that proved a politician shot at unarmed citizens.
Hours later, Pelumi is wounded and dragged into a Task Force van wearing a jacket that says PRESS. Days later, his family finds his corpse in a mortuary 33km from where he was taken.
Six years later, DNA finally confirms what every Nigerian on Twitter knew in November 2020. The man he filmed is still walking free. Nobody has been prosecuted or arrested.
This is the entire story of journalism in Nigeria in one sentence: the man with the gun lives, the man with the camera dies.
And NUJ. Where is the union supposed to exist for exactly this. A reporter is murdered for capturing evidence against a politician, and the body sits unidentified for six years, and the union’s contribution is a report co-authored with an NGO that nobody outside press circles ever reads.
If a young intern with no institutional backing could be brave enough to point a camera at a man firing live rounds, the least the union representing thousands of journalists could do is point a finger at the system that let his killer walk.
#JusticeForPelumi
The Agbado Division of @PoliceNG arrested Pelumi at home and his body mysteriously turned up in a morgue in Ikorodu. 6 years later, DNA has confirmed he’s the one.
What was Pelumi’s crime? He simply recorded and posted the scene where a known politician came out from his SUB and shot at protesters at Abule Egba during the October 2020 #EndSARS protest. The police did not arrest the person that discharged firearm into a crowd, they arrested, tortured and killed a young Nigerian student that was working as an intern at @Officialgboahtv for posting a crime scene on Social Media.
Do I need to demand #JusticeForPelumi?
The young man handling this camera, Pelumi Onifade was later hunted and killed, for heroicly capturing this moment. These are the legacies of Nigeria at 64.
Do not forgive, do not forget #EndSARS
"Police released Armed Fulani Militia, we arrested & gave them their AK-47's back to them"
Gov. Udom - *"We arrested persons with fake army uniforms carrying 18 AK-47's rifles and handed them over to the police"*
However, the police hierarchy gave express orders that those persons should be released and their guns handed back to them.
We want to let the world know that if there is a breakdown of law and order tomorrow, the police should be held responsible.
All attempts to speak with the top hierarchy of the police in the zone and at Abuja were rebuffed.

A notorious Islamic Fulani killer kidnapper, allegedly arrested by the Nigerian Police, was spotted live on TikTok.
Did the police release him as a ‘repentant terrorist’ or was he quietly bailed and allowed to walk free?
