اُكتشفت مخطوطات البحر الميت بين عامي 1947 و1956 في كهوف قمران. وتعتبر مخطوطة إشعياء الأبرز بينها، إذ تضم جميع فصول السفر الـ 66، ويعود تاريخها إلى حوالي عام 125 قبل الميلاد، أي قبل ألف عام من أقدم نسخ العهد القديم التي كانت معروفة سابقاً. ووفقاً للرواية البحثية، عثر عليها فتى بدوي عام 1947 بالصدفة بعد رميه حجراً داخل شق صخري، حيث سمع صوت تحطم جرة فخارية، ليجد بداخلها لفائف ملفوفة بالكتان، نُقلت لاحقاً إلى تاجر آثار في بيت لحم.
اشترى عالم الآثار البروفيسور أليعازر سوكينيك ثلاث لفائف لصالح الجامعة العبرية، بينما اشترى رئيس الكنيسة السورية اللفائف الأربع المتبقية وقام بتهريبها إلى الولايات المتحدة عام 1948. وفي عام 1954، نجح ابنه البروفيسور إيغال يادين في إعادة شرائها وإعادتها الى اسرائيل. تميزت هذه المخطوطة دوناً عن غيرها ببقائها كاملة، وهي مكتوبة باللغة العبرية التوراتية بالخط "الأشوري" (المربع) المشابه للخط العبري الحديث، وموزعة على 54 عموداً فوق 17 قطعة جلدية طولها 7 امتار مخيطة بخيوط الكتان.
