Throw Back Thursday: Did you ever wonder why TAZARA locomotives have the United States of America’s logo of partnership on them? The Tanzania-Zambia Rail Line opened in 1976 nominally to support regional economic integration. Just two years later – by late-1978 – the line’s poor quality and cutting of corners in project delivery left the rail line degraded and with only two operational locomotives.
In response to Zambia and Tanzania’s requests to accountable international partners to rehabilitate the prematurely decrepit railway, in the mid-1980s, the United States provided over $45 million (equivalent to over $130 million in today’s dollars) in grant assistance to purchase locomotives and wagons actually capable of traversing the line.
The U.S. assistance went further, providing training for everything from engineering skills to basic maintenance and repair skills. This grant assistance from the American people helped empower Tanzanians and Zambians to resurrect and maintain the railway, enabling it to remain operational for these past four decades to actually become a vital artery of regional commerce.
Now that’s partnership!

I urge Heads of State and the leaders of nations to listen to the cry of the poorest. There can be no peace without justice. The poor remind us of this in many ways, through migration as well as through their cries, which are often stifled by the myth of well-being and progress, which does not take everyone into account.
May we also #PrayTogether for #Tanzania, where, following the recent elections, violent clashes have broken out, leaving many victims. I urge everyone to avoid all forms of violence and to follow the path of dialogue.
@IssaShivji Utekaji bila kukomeshwa utazaa ugaidi. Ni hatari kubwa kwa amani yetu. Mtu akikosea apelekwe polisi na mahakamani. Haki itawale.
How come kama waliachana August na September Padre Nikata aendelee kutuma pesa ikiwa waliachana July?
I cannot prove it today, but I feel it deep within that 2025 will mark a turning point; one of Tanzania’s greatest years since colonial rule was broken.

Tanzania Takes Center Stage in East Africa’s Energy Revolution with EACOP Progress
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (@EACOP_ ) has reached a key milestone with the arrival of the first batch of line pipes in Uganda. This marks significant progress in the 1,443-kilometer project from Uganda to Tanzania’s Tanga Port. This development strengthens the partnership between Uganda and Tanzania, positioning the region as a critical energy player on the global stage.
Tanzania plays a pivotal role, with the pipes being coated and insulated at the Nzega Coating Yard. This process has created local jobs and stimulated economic activity, showcasing Tanzania’s growing technical expertise in energy infrastructure. The four pumping stations being constructed in Tanzania further cement the country’s importance in the project.
The EACOP project prioritizes sustainability, incorporating renewable energy like solar and hydropower to minimize environmental impact at the pumping, heating, monitoring, and storage operations stages. Uganda and Tanzania are committed to ensuring the pipeline operates in an environmentally responsible manner, highlighting the region’s focus on sustainable development.
With an estimated cost of $5 billion, the EACOP project, alongside Tanzania’s $40 billion LNG project in the southern regions, is set to enhance regional cooperation and solidify Tanzania’s position as a central hub in East Africa’s energy revolution. These initiatives will drive significant economic growth, positioning Tanzania and the region as emerging forces in the global energy market.
