In the late afternoon hours today, President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea arrived in Port Sudan for an extensive meeting with General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council. This encounter, held at the Government Headquarters, was more than a diplomatic courtesy, it was a powerful affirmation of solidarity at a time when Sudan faces existential threats from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

President Afwerki reiterated Eritrea’s firm and principled stance: unwavering support for Sudan’s unity and sovereignty. His words carried the weight of history, recalling the deep ties forged between Eritrea and Sudan during Eritrea’s own struggle for independence. By pledging to stand with Sudan “until the achievement of durable peace,” President Afewerki positioned Eritrea not merely as a neighbor, but as a steadfast ally in Sudan’s fight to preserve its national integrity.

For Sudanese leadership, government, and army, this visit is emboldening. It signals that their struggle against fragmentation is not fought in isolation. Eritrea’s solidarity strengthens morale, reminding Sudanese forces that their defense of sovereignty resonates across the Horn of Africa. In the face of RSF aggression, President Afewerki’s presence in Port Sudan is a diplomatic shield and a moral boost.
