ELON MUSK: “In order to ascend the Kardashev scale, in order to get to any meaningful percentage of the sun's energy harness, you have to go to space. If you want to get to, say, a millionth of the power output of the sun, you would have to increase civilizational energy harness by much more than a millionth.
We currently use much less than a trillionth of the power output of the sun. And a trillion is a million times a million. So basically, we're basically practically nowhere on the Kardashev 2 scale.”
wait a minute, elon musk:
- basically rebuilt america’s space ambitions after the shuttle program got retired. i mean the only way america could send astronauts to space was through the fucking russians! could you imagine if that dependency was still there with the conflict that exists today?
- turned electric cars that no one even remotely touched into a desirable mass market product… this also resulted in vast amounts of competition & other infra development (like the super charger network). he also effectively inspired the chinese electric car industry after they basically stole all of tesla’s secrets.
- acquired twitter & reopened parts of public debate that a ton of gatekeepers preferred closed & off limits. ppl got banned for simply asking questions during humanity’s most critical event (covid).
- & is now saving the sheer incompetence of the american govt by building out an american semiconductor complex.
you can dislike his politics, personality, or methods. but any honest macro accounting has to admit that few individuals ever have done more to rebuild strategic american capacity across space, transportation, communication, & now semiconductors.
the american media judges him tweet by tweet while barely acknowledging the rockets, factories, & infrastructure being built that should’ve actually been the responsibility of the collective. this is shameful af.
Far more than that.
As I’ve said publicly, bandwidth demand will increase massively due to AI & robotics. Their need for data transfer is orders of magnitude more than humans!
Even if the communications market merely doubles in size, I would expect Starlink to reach at least 25% market share outside of China (maybe one day in China too), which would be over half a trillion dollars in revenue per year.
It’s not out of the question that Starlink carries more than 50% of Internet traffic long-term, which would probably be over a trillion/year. There is no obvious impediment to that outcome so far.
David Friedberg: Starlink alone could be a trillion-dollar company
"Starlink alone could be generating on the order of $40 billion of revenue top line, with a huge amount of that flowing to free cash. That could be $30 billion in free cash flow within the year."
"That alone provides the cash flow to fund much of what Elon is doing. And if you just put a 30x multiple on that, which I think you can, because these subscription businesses have very high renewal rates and very low customer acquisition costs (CAC)."
"The Starlink business alone could be a trillion-dollar market cap within 18 months. That alone funds all the rest of this."
"You can see it in AT&T, Verizon, HughesNet, and Viasat... That market got decimated by Starlink."
"If he launches the handset thing, that subscriber growth is going to go. Right now, he's adding 2 million subscribers on the consumer side per quarter. You could see that going to 4 to 5 million a quarter. You could actually see an acceleration. There are 400 million mobile subs just in the U.S."
"And the rest of it is like, is Elon going to do well with the excess capital that's spinning out of Starlink? Well, I don't know who else I would give it to, considering what he's doing with Starship, AI compute, and the Terafab."
@elonmusk@friedberg@theallinpod
@aaronburnett No, I meant actual revenue in the year 2030 itself, not cumulative, which would be a higher number.
Of course, it’s always possible that we flounder along the way or are delusional, but those are our actual internal projections.
There is some confusion about Elon’s mention of $1T revenue from internal targets moving from 2031 to 2030/2029. He said explicitly that the $1T was not ARR just revenue (I believe that means cumulative revenue).
Their goals are pretty audacious already good idea not to get ahead of ourselves and put even bigger claims into the expectations sphere.
In theory this would place the ARR in 2029/2030 in that ~$300B+ range, though I’m not privy to internal targets.
Here is a clip of the recording of that exact phrasing.
