Oceana welcomes @EU_Commission's recognition of coastal communities' needs, but words aren't enough.
We call for the #EUOceanAct to establish an EU-wide exclusive coastal zone for small-scale fishers, free from destructive fishing like bottom trawling.
This #WorldOceanDay, we asked children to draw their favourite marine animal.🐋🐙
The ocean they imagined exists. And every single day, we work so they can keep having it.

Legal loopholes can enable illegal fishing & transnational crime.
At @EP_Fisheries, our Head of Campaigns @VVulperhorst called for action: she asked authorities to collect & publish beneficial ownership data & restrict EU citizens from owning vessels flying flags of convenience.
Today, small-scale fishers from across Europe urged @vitcheva_eu to take urgent action on the future of EU fisheries. Coastal communities need stronger support and clear plans at national & EU level. A valuable discussion on protecting livelihoods and sustainable fishing #EMD2026
Key discussions on future EU funding at the opening of #EMD2026: flexibility should not translate into deregulation or lack of ambition, particularly for priorities such as ocean protection and restoration, coastal community support, and small-scale fisheries. #MFF#RestoreOcean
Thank you Commissioner @CostasKadis, for closing Oceana’s symposium with a powerful message:
🗨️“With science as our guide and collaboration as our strength, we can secure a sustainable future for our ocean and those who depend on it.”
Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of prosperous fisheries, and there is no time to waste.
Our session called for real action: implement existing laws, scale up restoration, involve fishers & strengthen monitoring - grounded in solid science.
#EMD2026
In our session on rebuilding fish populations, one message was clear: recovery is possible, and already happening in Europe.
Protect juveniles, reduce fishing pressure, and improve monitoring. Science-based solutions work.
#CommonFisheriesPolicy#EMD2026
Our scientific symposium “Science at the Helm: Insights for EU Ocean Policy” has kicked off in Limassol 🇨🇾!
Ahead of #EMD2026, we’re bringing together science & policy experts to discuss how to strengthen ocean resilience, seafood transparency, and sustainable fisheries.
From 18-21 May, @UN_FAO_GFCM WestMed Subregional Committee will discuss the Fisheries Restricted Area for Cabliers, a long-delayed proposal backed by strong science. Cabliers hosts vulnerable, high value deep-sea ecosystems that need urgent protection.
It’s time for #CabliersFRA.
Oceana calls on Cyprus to collect information on companies owning fishing vessels in non‑EU countries.
Transparency on vessel ownership is key to prevent illegal fishing, ensure effective enforcement, & avoid unfair competition for compliant operators.

Oceana, junto a otras organizaciones y científicos, ha reclamado ante @gobmapa medidas urgentes para la protección efectiva de los espacios marinos protegidos.
Sin planes de gestión ni financiación adecuada, no hay conservación marina efectiva.

Hear scientists' views on why it is urgent for Mediterranean countries to extend the deep-sea trawl ban to 800m:
🧪backed by science
🎣minimal impact on fishing
🪸benefits for sealife and for fishers' future
#MedFish4Ever
Mediterranean fisheries ministers will meet in Cyprus this May to shape the future of #MedFish4Ever. It's the moment for @CostasKadis to support moving the deep-sea trawl ban to below 800m at the @UN_FAO_GFCM 2026 meeting.

@acousteau@xenia_loizidou
The @EU_Commission has published its evaluation of the #CommonFisheriesPolicy, assessing how the EU’s fisheries framework has performed since the 2013 reform.
✅The CFP remains fit for purpose, but only if it's fully and consistently implemented.
The #CommonFisheriesPolicy has proven to be effective when properly implemented.
Reopening it would only create uncertainty and put the progress made at risk. The EU needs to enforce existing rules and make the CFP work as intended: for fishers, communities, and the ocean alike.
🌊@CostasKadis has all the cards in his hand to support a shift in the deep-sea trawl ban to below 800 m at the GFCM annual meeting in 2026. Now it is a question of political willingness, say @acousteau & @xenia_loizidou in this op-ed:

#MedFish4Ever
At @UN_FAO_GFCM, the science is clear: Mediterranean deep-sea ecosystems are under threat & protecting them is vital. Extending the bottom trawling ban to below 800m has high ecological benefits & limited socio-economic impact. Time to turn science into protection. #DefendTheDeep
