@nateliason Following on Substack is like following in other places. It’s a lightweight way to express interest & see someone’s notes and recommendations in the app.
Getting followers is valuable because those people may go on to subscribe, & in the meantime, they can see & share your work.

We are careful to emphasize subscription & payment at the right moments (this is how we make money too!) but there are times where someone might not yet be ready to subscribe yet where a follow is valuable.
