I recorded this video at the Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, in the heart of Cusco, Peru, more than 11,000 feet above sea level.

You are looking at large blocks of andesite, an exceptionally hard volcanic stone.

Some of the masonry resembles giant LEGO pieces, incorporating complex male/female interlocking features that allowed neighbouring stones to physically interface with one another.

What makes the construction even more remarkable is what isn’t there.

There is no mortar, no cement, no conventional binding material holding these precision-formed blocks together. Instead, the stones were individually shaped so that adjoining surfaces met with remarkably tight tolerances.

Across the ancient architectural landscape of Peru you will find walls where the joints between polygonal blocks are so fine that they appear as little more than hairline seams running between each stone.

Whatever interpretation one places on the technology involved, the craftsmanship of the Qorikancha represents one of the most impressive surviving examples of precision stonework in the ancient Andes.

Use your voice for good.

We may not always be able to control what is said about us, how our image is used, or the hate that finds its way to our screens. But we do get to choose what we do next.
