During the 2023 Azimio protests, Maurice Ogeta says Professor Makau Mutua seriously undermined their efforts. According to Ogeta, the team had received credible intelligence about planned attacks and was actively discussing how to avoid them. Unbeknownst to him, however, Makau Mutua was inside their boss’s car live-streaming the entire coordination session.
Ogeta recounts: “To this day, I’m not sure if I have forgiven him. Why? He was in our boss’s car during the demonstration, recording live what was happening and documenting the coordination inside the vehicle. When you’re broadcasting live, both friends and enemies can see it. I was shocked to receive calls from people in the US and South Africa informing me that my actions were being scrutinized. I asked what they were talking about, and when I turned around, I realized it was Professor Makau.”
In Ogeta’s view, Mutua’s decision to broadcast the group’s real-time planning from inside the vehicle amounted to a clear betrayal of their operational security.
