I’ve come to realise that career growth is often a combination of:
Preparation + Strategy + Exposure + Opportunity + Favour.
We can influence some of these.
We can’t control all of them.
So yes, be strategic about your career.
Keep a record of everything you achieve at work.
Have it in a notebook or a simple Google Docs document.
Anytime you achieve something meaningful at work, write it down. Include the date, what you achieved, and how you did it.
If you work in sales, document the revenue you generated each month and quarter, the number of customers you acquired, and the targets you exceeded.
If you work in operations, document the problems you solved, the time you saved, and the processes you improved.
If you manage people, record how you helped your team perform better, the challenges you resolved, and the results you delivered.
Update this document every week or month.
You will need it for three things: appraisals, promotions, and job interviews.
When it is time to update your CV, you already have your achievements in front of you.
When you go for an interview, you have specific examples to share. And when a promotion opportunity comes, you have evidence to show that you are ready for the next level.
Even when asking for a salary increase, you won't have to rely on saying, "I've been working hard." You can point to the revenue you generated, the problems you solved, and the value you added to the business.
Document your achievements as they happen. Your memory will fail you, but your records won't.
Your tweet is emotional.
But trust me, a moving man they say, will surely find his luck.
I got into Deloitte while I just completed my NYSC.
My advice is understand the recruitment processes, connect with people who work there, especially the partners, and tailor your CV towards what you want, Audit, Tax, Forensics, Consulting, speak and place yourself in the role you aim for.
Deloitte interview process is demanding. The stages are very detailed, the key is to be bold and knowledgeable about the sector. I kid you not, during my interview we spoke so well about the finance industry, that we started bantering about football when they asked about hobbies. Yes I love books, but I didn’t go there saying I love books. Get an hobby, they literally champion on work life balance.
The written test, WRITE.
Whatever you’re asked to talk about, make sure you write until you’re out of ink. They are trying to gauge your mind, how innovative you think. So don’t just write a short story, express yourself, talk about the sector.
So when they say, write about Nigeria’s economic challenges and the way forward. Pretend you’re a consultant writing a report for the FG. Lock in. Touch every aspect you can think of, when you think you’ve written enough, YOU’VE NOT. Keep writing.
Trust me, there’s no better place to work than Deloitte, the experience, problem solving, strategy, management, and communication on pitch you build and learn is second to none.
Another cheat code, apply to smaller firms like Grant Thornton, EY, and KPMG 😏 where you can gain experience, with that you can easily use that to position yourself as an experienced hire, and even a possible easier promotion.
Most importantly, don't let rejection convince you that you're not good enough.
Don't stop applying just because the first few attempts didn't work.
It’s the best place to work for a reason.
You’d get it, just lock in.
A moving man… I wish you best of luck.
What!
