WORLD FOOD DAY: HUNGER IN NIGERIA, NOW A NATIONAL EMERGENCY
Yesterday, as the world marked International Rural Women’s Day, I joined Nigerian rural women who produce the food that sustains our population. What became clear to me is that hunger in the country must be declared a national emergency.
Today, as the world marks World Food Day, Nigerians are confronting a painful reality: hunger, poverty, and insecurity continue to affect millions of families across the country.
Nigeria is now one of the hungriest countries in the world, ranking 117th out of 125, down from 109th out of 125 in 2023, when the current administration came into office. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that about 36 million Nigerians will face acute hunger this year.
The tragedy is even more painful because Nigeria has vast, arable, and fertile land. Yet about 60% remains uncultivated, providing forest hideouts for terrorist organisations and other non-state actors.
On World Food Day, the message is clear: Nigerians deserve a country where no family goes to bed hungry, farmers can work without fear, and poverty and insecurity are confronted with urgency and compassion.
The fight against hunger must be treated as a national emergency.
Under our leadership, we will secure the country and return our hardworking farmers to their farms. They will receive targeted grants, subsidies, and other forms of support.
Together, we can build a Nigeria where no one goes to bed hungry and every farmer can work in peace and dignity. A New Nigeria is POssible.
Nigeria will be OK. -PO
The person was spot on.
Let’s even not discuss the THOUSANDS of women that have been raped physically during the booming kidnap economy—
Imagine telling the family of the woman who was pregnant and gave birth in the lair of kidnappers, only to be MADE TO WATCH WHILE THEY FED HER NEWBORN BABIES ALIVE TO THEIR DOGS that they should NOT end friendships over politics when the so called friends support those who facilitate such evil?
What sort of NONSENSE twisted sense of performative faux decency are you trying to portray???
I saw a Bag of Rice move from ₦6,000 to ₦60,000.
I saw a Loaf of Bread move from ₦300 to ₦1,500.
I saw a Plate of Food move from ₦500 to ₦3,000.
What did you see?
You cannot tell Nigerians to not remind Timi Dakolo of his pain.
When Busola Dakolo cried out about what Fatoyinbo did to her, Nigeria stood with her. We felt her pain. The issue trended. Blogs, WhatsApp, Facebook carried it. Timi Dakolo was our brother in pain, and we carried that pain with him.
Now that same Timi Dakolo is supporting APC and telling youths "don't kill yourself over friendship"? After APC has killed youths?
Who killed at Lekki Toll Gate? Who has left families crying over insecurity, over hunger, over fuel price? People have DIED. Youths have DIED. And you say don't kill yourself over friendship?
Look at the just concluded Osun Elections, people still died. How long are we going to keep on allowing this party ruin our lives? Look at your mates in saner climes, you cannot measure up to half of what they have achieved since they relocated.
Toluwanisings died because he was unattended to. A death that could have been easily be unavoided. A very brilliant and promising light gone. Just like that. All due to bad governance.
So yes, we WILL remind him and other people who are in support of this government.
People who knew nothing of Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo cancelled COZA because of you and your wife over an allegation that happened years before you got married to her.
Are you saying they were wrong to do that for you and your wife?
We should all have built a relationship with Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo.
Education Is the Foundation of a New Nigeria
Education remains the most important tool for development and nation-building. It has been proven that the more educated a nation is, the better it develops. It has also been proven that the developing and developed nations of today are those that have invested in education, healthcare and pulling people out of poverty.
Nigeria’s increasing poverty remains a consequence of not investing adequately in critical areas of development, especially education.
Today, while observing the International Day of Rural Women, I visited Sheda and Sheda Galadima, in Kwali Area Council of FCT, where I was surprised to see a huge number of school-age children in the market environs on a school day.
In my conversation with the children, I was deeply shocked to learn that they had been at home for over two weeks due to the teachers’ strike.
So, while we are busy inaugurating campaign councils with pomp and pageantry and declaring economic miracles, our young children of school age are loitering in the streets because of a strike, in a nation with already over 18 million out-of-school children.
It is time to put our children and the future of our country back at the centre of governance and government decisions. Under our leadership, investment in health and education, as well as pulling people out of poverty, will be our priorities.
The relevant authorities should immediately ensure that our children in public schools return to school in the FCT.
A New Nigeria is POssible, and Nigeria will be OK. -PO
The best thing I did for myself was leave Nigeria when I did.
I don't mean this from a classist POV or a view connoting I've escaped, as I haven't escaped because my friends and family live there - I mean it from a self preservation stance.
I'm an empath. People like myself process emotions longer than others.
The only time I've been depressed in my life (twice) was because of Nigeria, post 20.10.20.
Genuinely, if I still lived in Nigeria till now (in the past 6 years) - I would have run mad and I mean it literally.
Wike has just given my children's school one day to vacate the premises so that the new developers can demolish it and build estates, citing that the building is defective.
DEAR NIGERIANS, PLEASE VOTE WISELY COME 2027. DON'T ALLOW TRIBALISM, RELIGION OR WHATSOEVER CLOUD YOUR MIND.
YOU ARE ELECTING THEM TO SERVE, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.
NIGERIA BELONGS TO US. NOT SOME POLITICIANS AND THEIR FAMILIES
YOU DESERVES A BETTER LIFE THAN THIS 💭🙏🏼
