UNCLOS is the standard. Mischief Reef is within 200 nautical miles of Palawan and inside the Philippine EEZ. That law is clear: this area is covered by the Philippines’ sovereign rights over natural resources and economic activities. Wake-Up Call: For Government and Every Filipino

The health of a nation is not measured by promises or programs alone, but by the years its people live with dignity and wellness. In 2026, the average life expectancy of Filipinos is 70.2 years—just 67.2 years for men and 73.2 years for women. This is lower than the global average of 73.8 years, and it lags behind many of our ASEAN neighbors: Singapore (83.9), Thailand (78.7), Malaysia (76.8), Vietnam (76.6), Indonesia (72.9).

This stark reality is a wake-up call for government. Despite billions of pesos allocated for programs like MAIFIP, the poorest patients remain neglected, confused, and burdened. They are sick now, yet the help promised to them is delayed, unclear, or inaccessible. Funds must not be trapped in bureaucracy or politics. They must flow directly to patients through PhilHealth, where case rates can be raised, benefits expanded, and out-of-pocket expenses reduced. Every peso withheld is another day of suffering for families already living on the margins.

But this is also a wake-up call for every Filipino. While we demand accountability from our leaders, we must also embrace responsibility for our own health. Preventive care—regular check-ups, balanced nutrition, exercise, and avoidance of harmful habits—remains the most powerful shield against disease. Self-care is not selfish; it is an act of love for family and community. A healthier citizenry is a stronger nation.

The Philippines’ shorter lifespan compared to ASEAN peers is not destiny—it is a challenge. With relentless government reform and individual commitment to self-care, we can extend not only the years of life but the quality of those years.

Health with honor is not a dream—it is a duty.

Great story by the Inquirer.

During the entire Duterte administration, over P330 BILLION PESOS was spent on "flood control" projects between the periods of 2017 to 2019. Oddly enough, this is close to the amount of the money he cut from the Armed Forces Modernization Fund, as reported by @MonteroMax .

The Filipino people must ask where that money went and who benefited from it. The funding was broken down as so.

- 2017: P79 billion
- 2018: P134 billion
- 2019: P119 billion

A good place to start asking is places where the money went. A lot went to flood-free towns/municipalities that were never highlighted by local or international studies (Project NOAH, World Bank, JICA) as flood-probe. The House of Representatives has done great work unearthing all this and bringing it to light.

Example: Casiguran, Sorsogon got P385 million for "flood-control" projects in 2019 despite not being highlighted as flood prone. Nearby Matnog, Sorsogon - which IS a flood-prone area, got nothing.

Mayor Jose Edwin Hamor of Casiguran, Sorsogon, is the husband of Sorsogon Vice Gov. Ester Hamor, the mother of Romeo Sicat Jr., who is the husband of DUTERTE'S BUDGET SECRETARY Benjamin Diokno's daughter, Charlotte Justin.

Aremar Construction Corp., which was involved in several public works projects worth P10 billion in Sorsogon in partnership with other companies, also was owned by the Hamor family.

Projects awarded in Casiguran, a flood-free town with ties to Duterte's budget secretary:
- Somal-ot Seawall: P100M
- Lungib Embankment: P80M
- Himaoyan Flood Control: P75M
- Cagpagol River Control: P45M
- Suji River Control: P25M
- Poblacion Drainage: P60M

This is just one municipality. Multiply this many times over and you will understand the rot which plagues our public works and finance departments - worsened under Duterte and pervasive under now.
