Pavlos Calls for Resilience and Tactical Discipline as Punjab FC Prepare for Churchill Test

Punjab FC head coach Pavlos Dermitzakis has emphasised his side’s determination to compete until the final whistle, while left-back Mohammad Uvais has underlined the importance of defensive discipline ahead of their Indian Super League encounter against Churchill Brothers.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Dermitzakis reflected on Punjab’s ability to find late goals in recent outings, describing the team’s persistence as a reflection of its character, strength and mentality.

“For a team, pressing until the last minute shows strength, power and strong character. We refuse to lose,” the Greek tactician remarked, highlighting the tactical importance of substitutions and the collective responsibility of players to execute their designated roles. He added that Punjab’s objective was to build a side capable of competing from the first minute to the last.

Providing updates on the fitness of Malsa and Pattrick, Dermitzakis revealed that Pattrick was currently nursing a minor injury and would require some time before returning to action. The coaching staff, he explained, would ensure the player’s return was managed carefully. Malsa, meanwhile, had arrived during the closing stages of the transfer window with his physical condition below the desired level. However, the coach expressed confidence in the midfielder’s professionalism and daily training, adding that he had been included in the squad list for the upcoming fixture.

Turning his attention to Churchill Brothers, who enter the contest following a heavy defeat against East Bengal, Dermitzakis acknowledged the possibility of capitalising on their opponents’ vulnerabilities but cautioned against complacency.

“Although they are coming after a huge defeat, we cannot forget that they were playing against a big club,” he noted, referring to East Bengal’s stature and resources. The Punjab coach also pointed to Churchill’s enthusiasm as a newly promoted side, suggesting that his team would look to exploit moments when their opponents might be caught unprepared.

Nevertheless, Dermitzakis warned that Churchill possessed individuals capable of causing problems if Punjab failed to maintain tactical discipline. He stressed the need for cohesion, a strong collective performance and a positive result, while acknowledging that the task would be far from straightforward.

For Uvais, the challenge will be particularly significant on the left flank, with Churchill expected to exploit the wide channels and overlapping movements. Asked how he intended to balance his attacking contributions with his defensive responsibilities, the full-back made his priorities clear.

“My coach has always said that, for a full-back, defending is the most important thing,” Uvais explained. He added that he sought to maintain an equal balance between attacking and defensive duties, expressing readiness to embrace the challenge.

With Punjab looking to sustain their competitive momentum, the encounter will test both their tactical organisation and their ability to maintain concentration against a Churchill Brothers side eager to respond. Dermitzakis’s emphasis on resilience and discipline, coupled with Uvais’s readiness to shoulder his defensive responsibilities, sets the tone for a contest in which composure could prove decisive.
