워싱턴 주재 한국 대사관은 목요일 논평 요청에 즉각 응답하지 않았다. 조던 의원과 법사위원회 동료들에 따르면, 이 법은 ‘허위 정보’를 명확히 정의하지 않아 정부가 ‘정치적으로 비호감인 의견’을 표적으로 삼는 데 악용될 수 있다. 한국 내 기자들과 시민 자유 단체들도 이 법에 반대해 왔다.

피츠제럴드 의원은 성명에서 “어떤 외국 정부도 미국 기업에 압력을 가해 헌법상 보호받는 발언을 검열하게 만들 권한을 가져서는 안 된다. 한국의 이른바 ‘허위 정보’ 법은 모호하고 광범위하며 남용될 소지가 크다. 의회는 외국 정부가 검열을 수출하고 미국인의 수정헌법 제1조상 온라인 자유를 훼손하려는 시도를 계속 조사할 것”이라고 밝혔다. 한국은 지난주 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 강제 노동 관행을 이유로 새로운 관세를 부과한 수십 개 국가 중 하나였다. 또한 하원 법사위원회는 지난 7월 한국 정부가 미국 기반 온라인 소매업체 쿠팡에 대해 차별을 가했다는 보고서를 발표한 바 있다.

I've been to that synagogue before, it's beautiful and the community around it is very involved in the area. The only one taking this threat seriously is former representative @MikeRogersForMI and that should be a wakeup call for how far the Democratic Party has fallen.
