When poverty affects more than 140 million Nigerians, appeals for musicians, philanthropists and private citizens to create welfare foundations expose a deeper policy failure.

Charity is valuable, but charity cannot become Nigeria’s economic plan.

Government controls oil revenue, taxes, national budgets, social investment programmes and the policies shaping food, fuel, electricity and transport costs. It must therefore explain why millions remain trapped in poverty despite repeated reforms and enormous public spending.

Nigerians need structural solutions:

Jobs that pay living wages.
Affordable food and transportation.
Reliable electricity for small businesses.
Transparent social protection.
Secure farms and productive industries.

Private generosity may rescue thousands. Good governance must lift millions.

The poverty crisis will not be solved by outsourcing responsibility to celebrities. It will be solved when public policy begins increasing household income instead of repeatedly increasing household expenses.
