In the meantime, I have been able to brush off some subtitles I began a long time ago for GHOST MAN (1954), an early adaptation of a Kosuke Kindaichi detective story. Progress will be posted here:

Currently at 25% for AN ODE TO YAKUZA - a quarter of the way through. Yakuza accents are annoyingly hard to decipher - relying pretty heavily on the script for a lot of the main character's dialogue!

The dialogue features heavy Kyushu accents and rural dialects, and I would not have been able to translate portions of it without the original script. Thank goodness a lot of these older films had their scripts posted in film magazines all those years ago!

What a journey this film is. A vast pallette of richly portrayed characters, compelling historical backdrops of Taisho-era western Japan, and a healthy dose of humor. Tour de force performance by Hiroko Maki.

And onto the next project: Tai Kato's THE BLOSSOM AND THE SWORD (1973). Excited about this one - big Tai Kato/Hajime Kaburagi fan. Given the length and difficulty, this may be another long-term project, but stay tuned for updates.
