1. I have just seen the Minority position rejecting the Government’s decision to explore BRIC’s partnership.
2. This reminded of something. Many years ago when I used to work in DC, i was part somewhat of the Washington bubble.
3. Apart from the legal work, I was part of the Africa practice Group, which was focused on business development on the continent. It was in the course of that work that I first met Alan Kyerematen. And also Simon Madjie.
4. That practice was throughly eccletic. When Nigeria imposed huge tax bill on MTN; we brought in Eric Holder, former Attorney-General under Obama and then Partner at our firm, to go to Nigeria to negotiate the issue with the Nigerian Government.
5. When the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement–Second Revolution (SLM-SR) were negotiating the peace agreement in Doha, Qatar, based on the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD); we were there.
6. When a Ukrainian business wanted to supply chicken to the whole of west Africa, we were there. When American businesses were being investigated for Foreign Corrupt Practices in Africa; that practice was there.
7. Even though it was a practice in a law firm, that practice grope was headed by Witney Schneidman, a former undersecretary of state for Africa at the State Department Under Clinton I think. He was a non lawyer.
8. Anyway, one thing everyone marvelled about in Washington was how extremely bi-partisan Foreign Relations Committee in Congress; and in particular the Africa subcommittee was. It was the only Commitee where both Democrats and Republicans were the most aligned.
9. Americans read from same script when pursuing their foreign interests. They were divided at home for sure. On many issues they were. But when it came to American strategic interests abroad, they read from the same script, don’t be fooled. When Trump says America must get Greenland; best believe everyone on that Foreign Relations Committee are holding meetings and briefings behind the scene how to secure that deal. When Americans go into Venezuela, the others may be fighting and disagreeing publicly. Not the Foreign Relations folk. They are getting briefings about how much strategic oil reserves American companies can procure.
10. Come to Ghana. Government rescues Ghanaians in South Africa, the minority will come out and say no. Ghana says we need a seat in the Security Council, the minority will say we don’t need any chair. Government says we need to recover our mines for Ghanaians, and nationalize our strategic assets, minority will release a statement saying we disagree.
11. Partisanship cannot never take a break in Ghana. Except on one thing alone. Increasing MPs ex gratia. Allah, everyone make study. United as bob marley and wee.
Oman waɛ!
Shalom
@SIKAOFFICIAL1 Slowly and surely we'll get there. We'll come up with the laws, infrastructure and policies to prevent accidents like these. But until then, let's appreciate the sacrifices these citizens are making. Their death is not on vain. It's for a greater lesson
