State Rep. Michael Rivers, 67, of St. Helena Island was arrested October 9 by SLED on a felony pointing and presenting a firearm charge.

The June 9 incident at Green Pond Community Center occurred on primary day during an argument with the uncle of his Democratic challenger Shannon DeLoach over the District 121 race.

An affidavit states Rivers retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and pointed it at the man. The charge is supported by multiple witness statements and video evidence from the parking lot.

Rivers, a pastor, Air Force veteran and chair-elect of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, has represented the district since 2016. He lost the primary to DeLoach.

After booking he was released on personal recognizance. He denies the accusation and attributes it to a political opponent. Fellow Democratic state Rep. Seth Rose is representing him, and the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute.
