@KatyDornbos@FlinnScientific@POGILproject We've loved POGILs for years. We now even write and rewrite a lot of our own local chem POGILs for topics we couldn't find the right material for.
@IBchemmilam@wessmccaffery As I understand it, quantum wave modeling does change some of this. Among the issues is that valence electrons aren't "outside" core electrons, their wave functions do extend all the way to the neighborhood of the nucleus, but their wave functions extend further than core e-.
@aserkin@SecaurPhysics The Earth & Space strand is all too often neglected in high school. It's a full 1/3 of the NGSS content standards, yet many students graduate high school without taking a single course that is primarily focused on those topics.
@aserkin For chem, we love our LQ2s. For messier days, it's nice not to have any Chromebooks or other devices around. Our physics program prefers LQ mini attached to PCs so they can use the full PC app for data analysis. Ditto on everything said about Vernier's amazing customer service.
Because, why not include some #MarioKart on my chemistry test? π
My students thought that "Double-Dash" on Game Cube was the original, so yeah, as far as I'm concerned, Mario Kart is an important part of their curriculum. Thanks to @ohsjohnson for sharing the pics.
Today we're doing a relay race review activity to finish our unit, and our non-twitter #ohsteamchem member Deb got us to play the Mario Kart soundtrack. Perfect energy for this activity! @jen_chem101#theming
@EPantano@jen_chem101 Without a gender binary, there is no longer an analogy for the requirement to pair a positive ion with a negative, and when you're displacing, only displacing an ion of the same type. Heteronormative dancing had that, and without that aspect, we decided to go another route.
@aserkin I think that the black-boxness of some modern equipment can lead to students not conceptualizing measurements...but I have no qualms about just using electronic balances as weight is just so tangible.
@pcaginalp@jen_chem101 We're keeping the Bohr model among our "past, incorrect" models of the atom, but trying to do better about not having it beyond that and only use the modern quantum wave model once we pass over Bohr as an incorrect model.
So in going over our periodic table unit today, we realized we have to pull the Bohr model from our trendy periodic table POGIL (and replace it with electron wave model). He refuses to roll over and play dead! @jen_chem101#skippingbohr#oregonhsteamchem#augustteacherprobs
@pcaginalp@jen_chem101 Student get stuck on the idea of electrons as particles as finite points rather than space-filling waves. Last thing we want to do is introduce sticky misconceptions.
