“45 years ago, Supreme Court ruled in Milliken v. Bradley school districts don't have to integrate across district lines.” Justice Marshall’s dissent in case worth a read (easy 2 find online). Remember: many current judicial nominees refusing to say Brown was correctly decided.
Worth considering alongside recent work of @EdBuild on school district borders that significantly separate communities by race and funding. See “Dismissed: America’s Most Divise Borders.” @opportunityorg
This is part of the reason why the ACLU, @NAACP_LDF & concerned parents filed to reopen the Bradford case. The State of Maryland has chronically underfunded Baltimore City Schools for generations. They have failed to address the abysmal school facility conditions our City schools
Interesting points here about low-income students’ lack of access to counseling & other supportive services. Now, what about the children recently orphaned by ICE raids in MS? Who’s looking out for their needs? Virtuous people in local MS communities, I imagine. It’s not enough.
Kids at South San Antonio High School fell into the notorious “school-to-prison pipeline” because they were too depressed or anxious to get to school and keep up with classes. Staying on course required more mental and emotional stamina than they had https://t.co/Pw7W0Adz57
As millions of students head #backtoschool we’re grateful for Gavin Grimm’s victory in court. This is just the latest court decision to show that the law stands behind what we know is true: #transstudents have the right to be safe and included in school. https://t.co/F8MkoClktm
The rule issued today by the Trump admin will harm children & likely keep — or newly split — apart many families. It will also diminish many kids’s long-term prospects because they won’t receive benefits important to their growth: https://t.co/FXyE44nuiy

TOMORROW, 8/14: Join us, @amprog, @fractweets, @hunger, & more across the country for a #ProtectSNAP#HandsOffSNAP tweet storm from 3 - 4p ET. Critical assistance for 3.1 million people is at stake. Join us! ✊✊✊
The final #PublicCharge rule is another attempt by the Trump admin. to instill fear and make it tougher for immigrant families — particularly families of color and low-income families — to enter and stay in the U.S. legally and access lifesaving programs https://t.co/lRRqQC7LIw
@JahanaHayesCT: When I heard US Sec. of Ed. say she wanted to get fed. gov. out of the way so parents can make all of the decisions, I thought about the students that don’t have parents ready or able to advocate for them. As a 17-yr old mom, I wasn’t ready to be that advocate.
@JahanaHayesCT: I’d seen people frustrated and angry with the results of elections before, but this time they were organized. People were frustrated before, but they didn’t show up. This time was different. It goes back to organizing efforts that started for the 2008 elections.
Excited to join @EdCounselDC for an audience with @JahanaHayesCT. It’s great to have a National Teacher of the Year in Congress. She is starting the day by discussing equity and the need to protect and strengthen supports for the most vulnerable students. @opportunityorg
@opportunityorg New report from EPI, by Morsy & Rothstein, speaks to some of this, but from viewpoint of toxic stress. My colleague, Utieyin Etchie, working on piece that wonders if some school discipline punishes black students for being angry, frustrated, tired, anxious.
“Do Black boys & girls get to be children? Do they have the right to act as a child?” @Sifill_LDF on the injustices many students of color face when facing #SchoolDiscipline practices #SafeInclusiveSchools
@jbrownedianis 13 videos of students being beaten up by police in schools does not speak to “safety” in schools. And we see these because students were able to film them. How many times are these incidents not on tape?
@jbrownedianis We talk about expulsions and students being removed from school for stupid reasons, but we don’t talk as much about not meeting the special needs of our students. We haven’t talked about LGBTQ youth in schools that can’t or won’t support them. #SafeInclusiveSchools
Bronxdale High is in a co-located space. At first, the positive changes did not spread to the other co-located school. In part this was b/c the two schools didn’t have the same resources; also, differences in belief in inclusive, restorative discipline. #SafeInclusiveSchools
This also goes to another conversation from this morning: when it becomes a federal civil rights complaint, in some ways it’s already too late b/c the action has already happened. How can we be more proactive? #CISDialogues#SafeInclusiveSchools
Johanna Molina, senior at Bronxdale High, talking about student mediation program and restorative practices and having people to talk to and help fix problems as they come up. #SafeInclusiveSchools
@LynnJenningsPhD Individual examples of success are great, but we don’t have great work happening in enough places. The federal government has a job to do & we can’t let them off the hook for protecting civil rights & supporting excellence for all students. #SafeInclusiveSchools
Principal Quintana talking about supports for staff and students, and structuring a thoughtful, ongoing approach to HR decisions and being responsive to local community needs. #SafeInclusiveSchools
One of the things that had to be changed was what was believed about children—Principal Carolyne Quintana on discipline reform at Bronxdale HS @LPI_Learning @NASSP @DignityinSchool#SafeInclusiveSchools
