Story of George Floyd
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died during an arrest by Minneapolis police. Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck and upper back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down on the street. Floyd had been detained after a store clerk reported that he used a suspected counterfeit $20 bill. Floyd repeatedly told officers “I can’t breathe” and called out for his mother. Despite becoming unresponsive, Chauvin continued to pin him down as three other officers assisted in the restraint or held back concerned bystanders. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.A bystander’s video of the incident quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled Floyd’s death a homicide, citing cardiopulmonary arrest caused by law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.Floyd’s death triggered some of the largest protests in U.S. history under the Black Lives Matter movement. Demonstrations spread across the United States and around the world, with protesters demanding an end to police brutality and systemic racism. While most protests were peaceful, some cities saw riots, looting, and significant property damage.
