Imagine being investigated by the General Medical Council, the organisation that regulates doctors and decides whether you can continue practising medicine.
Every letter through the door fills you with dread. Every email makes your stomach drop. Every unknown phone call leaves you wondering what comes next.
The investigation doesn’t just affect your job. It follows you home. It keeps you awake at night. It affects your confidence, your relationships and your mental health. Your family watches the person they know slowly disappear under the weight of months, sometimes years, of uncertainty.
This isn’t just an investigation. For many doctors, it becomes one of the most distressing experiences of their lives.
Tragically, some doctors have died by suicide while undergoing GMC investigations.
Recently the Court of Appeal ruled that the GMC does not owe a duty of care to doctors during investigations of their fitness to practise.
Nobody is arguing that doctors shouldn’t be held to account where there are concerns about patient safety. Accountability is fundamental to medicine.
But surely we should also expect a regulatory system to recognise the profound human impact its own processes can have. Protecting patients and treating doctors with fairness, dignity and compassion are not competing goals. A fair regulator should be able to achieve both.

🚨 Senior Urology Trainees – Preparing for Consultancy?
Few spaces left on the acclaimed Oxbridge Medical Management Course. 1-2nd July 2026, Homerton College, Cambridge. Book at https://t.co/QYBNDgGXNC @OJWiseman@bwturney
This is awful.
The NHS cut the number of radiology trainees between 2022 and last year.
4011 qualified doctors applied for just 356 jobs in radiology last year.
That means we turned away 3655 doctors whilst scans are piling up.
Cuts to training numbers don’t help anyone.
Whatever you think about resident doctor strikes, the govt's decision to downgrade the NHS by - yes, you read that right - "reducing reliance on doctors" is appallingly short-sighted. This will punish patients, who have a right to access high quality care from appropriately qualified medical professionals. How exactly is improving the NHS compatible with reducing its numbers of doctors, @wesstreeting? This is exactly what Jim Mackey appears to be announcing 😳

Really important paper here on nursing staff and mortality.
Firstly, it uses a different methodology from the extensive (+excellent) work done by @LindaAiken_Penn and the Southampton Group. Reaches the same conclusions. So confirms results.
