Things I've learned while making $200,000+ on social media in 2023.
How Social Media Works:
1. People who think social media is toxic have no idea how to use it.
2. Contrary to popular opinion, social media is not meant for exchange of views or to engage in a dialog. The main purpose of social media is to make money – for companies and for individuals like you and me.
3. Most social media users are passive consumers. A very small number of users create content for others to consume.
4. Treat social media as a big classroom or a business meeting. Use the same language on social media that you will in a classroom or a meeting. Don’t swear. Don’t be crass.
5. Delete message that just go “Hi.” People who send messages like these have no idea what they want to talk about.
On Writing:
6. Learn to learn. Stay teachable. Try to become your own mentor.
7. When starting out, post as much as you can as you quickly as you can. Don’t worry about grammar or spellings. A misspelled sentence that people read is always better than a perfectly constructed sentence that no one reads.
8. Learn to write simple, declarative sentences. For example: Do X and Y will happen. You will feel tempted to sound clever and witty. Don’t. Stick to declarative sentences.
9. Build a writing routine. Try to write every day. But if you miss a day, don’t try to make up for it. Life happens. Give yourself grace.
10. If you like someone's post, pay more attention to its structure than content. Steal other people’s content and you will be considered a thief, a plagiarizer. Steal their structure and you will be considered an artist.
Personal Growth:
11. It’s okay to feel jealous of others. Do that for five minutes. Then get to work.
12. Learning by failing is much better than waiting for someone to teach you. Try, fail, learn. Fail faster so you can learn faster.
13. One of the easiest ways to develop your self-esteem is stop overusing “sorry.” You want to decline an invitation, there is no need to say “sorry” or “unfortunately” you can’t make it.
14. Learn to accept compliments. Someone praises your work, say thank you. That’s it. Don’t diminish, deflect, or downplay a compliment.
15. Engage is self-reflection but don’t use language that is self-critical. Don’t say things like “I’m not good at X,” “I could never do Y,” etc. Instead, use language that is self-affirming. It feels cringey before it starts working.
16. Go to therapy. There is something going on in your head that you don’t know. Therapy will help you figure that out.
Monetization:
17. When most people think of making money on social media, they think of platform monetization — like you post videos on YouTube and get paid by YouTube. This is only one and mostly an inefficient way of making money unless you are a very big creator.
18. The easiest way to make money on social media is to build a community and find out a problem the community is facing. Example: someone doesn’t how to cook, lose weight, or write a journal article. Create a solution for that problem. Sell that solution to make money.
19. People who say “money can’t buy happiness” neither know how money works nor happiness. They have also never had a single original thought in their lives, that’s why they use cliches like this. Stay away from them.
20. Toni Morrison said “You wanna fly, you got to give up the shit that weighs you down.” Don’t interact with negative comments and people. They will weigh you down. Negative comments literally cost you money. Every minute you spend interacting with them is a minute you are not making money.
21. If you think writing an academic article is serious work and writing on social media is not, you will never be able to make money on social media.
22. Promote yourself every day. If you don’t blow your own trumpet who will. There will always be people who won’t like your self-promotion. They are not your audience. Block them.
23. There will always be people who like your content and there will always be haters. Selling a product to your supporters is far easier than convincing your haters. Forget about haters. Preach to the converted.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but there are people speaking nicely about you behind your back. People are conspiring about ways to help you. People are advocating for you. People are genuinely rooting for you behind your back. Not everyone is against you although it may feel like it at times. 🙏🏼
