BREAKING: Democratic Congressman Greg Casar takes a heroic stand in Texas by holding an all-day "thirst strike" on the steps of the Capitol to call for a federal heat rule to protect workers amidst record-breaking heat waves.
Casar has bravely vowed not to drink, eat, or take a break "until nurses require him to stop" despite the forecast predicting temperatures as high as 90 degrees.
More than 400 workers died in heat waves between 2011 and 2021. That number is going to skyrocket as climate change worsens.
Horrifyingly, Texas' MAGA Gov. Greg Abbott recently signed a law to strip power from cities and eliminate exiting heat protections in places like Dallas and Austin — a move that blatantly puts the profits of companies over the health of workers.
Republicans could not make it any more clear that they will always value $$$ over human lives. Theirs is a sick, psychopathic political project.
Congressman Casar is holding them accountable.
"Today I’m on a thirst strike on the steps of the U.S. Capitol—not drinking water or taking breaks, through rain or shine, in solidarity with our nation’s workers," announced Casar. "Currently there are NO federal protections for workers exposed to heat."
Casar slammed Abbott for signing a law to eliminate workers' rights to water breaks despite the historic heatwave, exposing them to "deadly 100°+ temperatures."
This is the kind of personal bravery we rarely see in American politics any more. Representative Casar should be celebrated for his heroism.
Workers deserve to be treated like human beings. Congress must pass heat protections immediately!
