RULE 8 – LAWYERS IN SALARIED EMPLOYMENT

Rule 8 reminds us that if you're an in-house counsel or a lawyer in salaried employment, you can't automatically do everything a lawyer in private practice can.
You generally can't appear in court as your employer's advocate, prepare or sign legal documents outside what the Rules allow, or even represent your company in court simply because you're a director.
There are a few exceptions, like government legal officers, representation as an authorised officer or agent where the law permits, and lawyers serving in the Armed Forces acting in their official military capacity.

Your practising licence follows you to work every day, but your role as an employee also sets limits on how you can practise.
