I still remember when my colleague was kidnapped on her way home from work early this year.
For two months, her parents ran from pillar to post, borrowing money and begging family and friends to help raise the ransom.
When she finally came home, she narrated how they were gang-raped every morning and night.
The kidnappers chose their victims and temporary married them to themselves celebrating, eating and drinking like it was a legal union.
She said sometimes they shared one woman among two, three, or four men.
Weeks after her release, she was found pregnant.
That same week, we lost her to su!cide. The trauma was more than her heart could bear.
And whenever I see people still supporting this government, I remember her. I remember her parents, I think of other victims that never made it to the media.
How do you watch people suffer d!e like this and still defend a government that has failed to protect them?
Are you human at all or just deliberately wicked?
This is what Nigerians across all levels don’t understand. We are not all going to get rich, the chance is even slighter in this climate. But we all deserve a decent life, and for that, we must have functioning systems & institutions.
Keeping everyone (including Africans) completely ignorant about Africa and the central role it plays in the economic and natural world is a core feature of Europeanised education, not a bug.
You're not supposed to know that the DRC is the most resource-rich country in the world, with an estimated $24 trillion sitting under its soil. You're not supposed to know that the rise of "western civilisation" from the 15th century on was entirely made possible by European contact with Africa, and that the resources and labour extracted from coastal West Africa from 1492 onwards are the entire reason why both American continents exist in their current form.
You're not supposed to know that both WW1 and WW2 were essentially wars fought over the right to African colonial domination and expansion, and that even the uranium that was used in "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki came from Shinkolobwe uranium mine in eastern DRC. You're not supposed to know that the reason the country of France exists in its current form is because tens of thousands of conscripted West African soldiers fought and won against the Nazis in Europe, and the French thereafter shipped them back to West Africa and massacred them at Camp Thiaroye in Senegal to avoid paying them their due wages.
You're not supposed to know that there was nothing cold about the so-called Cold War, because the vast majority of the hot theaters it was physically fought in were on the continent of Africa. (Zimbabwe, DRC, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Eritrea, Zambia etc). You're not supposed to know that the ongoing Ukraine war and the war in the Sahel are in fact the same conflict being fought by the same 2 sides, and that the reason France is desperately pushing funding and arms to Ukraine even as it falls into internal crisis is that Ukraine is acting as its proxy army in West Africa, as it tries to regain its lost colonial territories there, especially Niger where the cheap yellowcake uranium for its famously cheap nuclear energy used to come from before the 2023 revolution.
You're definitely not supposed to know that the entire global economy and system of trade as you know it is built on ruthless extraction from Africa and ensuring that Africa does not control anything it exports. You're not supposed to know that "Italian leather" doesn't come from Italy - it comes from Kano, Nigeria. You're not supposed to know that "Swiss chocolate" does not exist because cocoa does not grow anywhere in Switzerland or Europe - it comes from Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria. You're not supposed to know that Israel and the UAE control the global diamond and gold markets even though Israel has no diamond mine and the UAE has zero gold mines, because both resources are literally being stolen from the DRC and Sudan on an industrial basis.
You're basically not supposed to understand that the entire geopolitical world as you know it, rests entirely on extraction from Africa, poverty of Africans, and your own ignorance about where everything you use comes from.
Completely deliberate 500+ year-old feature, not accidental bug.
Choose a president that will be visible, available, and accountable to you. Choose a president that considers you worthy of his audience. That's how to be treated like human beings, respectably. It's a pity that one has to say these very basic and obvious things. But when a people are enslaved in their minds, it's hard for them to imagine normalcy and decency.
A dark truth: In a country broken by poverty and lack, selling hope and anger pays much better than actually fixing anything.
African activists have become rich via this means.
You get more money from selling hope than fixing any problem.
We need to stop excusing the bad behaviour of our politicians and calling everything “politics.”
No.
It is not politics.
When you deliberately lie against another politician like Soludo is doing to Peter Obi, that is not “politics.”
It is bearing false witness.
When you deliberately misrepresent a policy that could benefit the country, work against it, and then years later come out to say:
“I was only playing politics.”
NO.
You deliberately put political interest above the interest of the country.
When you pay people to vote for you, disrupt elections, snatch ballot boxes or manipulate election results, that is not politics.
That is electoral malpractice.
That is undermining the people’s right to choose their leaders.
When you misappropriate public funds, that is not politics.
It is stealing.
When you abuse your office for personal gain, that is not politics.
It is corruption.
When you deliberately sabotage something that would benefit Nigerians simply because your political opponent might get credit for it, that is not politics.
That is putting personal ambition above the public interest.
I can go on and on.
There has to be a line between playing politics and engaging in conduct that is simply wrong, unlawful and punishable.
We have become so used to politicians doing terrible things that we have created this convenient umbrella called “politics” and thrown everything under it.
No o.
Politics is not a licence to lie.
It is not a licence to steal.
It is not a licence to rig elections.
It is not a licence to sabotage your own country.
It is not a licence to put your personal political interest above the welfare of millions of people.
Call bad behaviour what it is.
Because the moment we start excusing everything as “politics,” we make accountability almost impossible.
Their desperate alliances against PO are across all ethnic groups and religions. All. They know how to come together to survive. But the poor masses are out there fighting each other over same tribalism and religions. When will my people become aware? When will they learn? They're counting on you being divided. The tribalist seed that was sown in 2023 is still waxing strong. Why? People are not able to see the bigger picture. This and only this is why their sufferings seem protracted and permanently irreversible.
David Hundeyin’s views on the CIA and the whole Afrobeats brouhaha have sparked plenty of debate. But there is one very simple point that is difficult to ignore:
What you repeatedly consume eventually shapes your mind, your thoughts and, to some extent, your actions.
It is the same reason many Christians choose not to listen to “worldly music.”
Afrobeats used to be more than the scraggy lyrics we hear today, lyrics that glorify fraud, sex and drugs, constantly eulogise and objectify women, and make women, money and materialism the central focus of the young Black man.
I stopped listening to contemporary Afrobeats a long time ago. I moved to old school Afrobeat, reggae, movie scores and classical music. I can enjoy music without constantly feeding my mind the same themes.
You don’t have to agree with every claim David Hundeyin makes about the CIA to understand the basic principle. What you repeatedly put into your mind matters.
What you listen to. What you watch. What you read. What you consume.
It all leaves something behind.
When you wake up is your morning.
When a society breaks down, the armed robbers, fraudsters, drug dealers, kidnappers etc become kings.
And the professionals become beggars and destitutes
(Quoting @gechife)
My biggest fear for Nigeria is no longer how bad things are.
It is that the Nigerians who have never known anything better are becoming the majority.
They have no memory of what functional looks like. No reference point for what they should expect.
And you cannot demand a standard you don’t even know exists.
- no state can manage waste disposal properly
- no state has functioning pipe-borne water
- no state has functioning emergency response services
- no state has proper healthcare systems
- no state has at least 85% good road networks
- no state has functional public transportation systems
- every state has dilapidated schools
The only functional thing are the protruding politicians bellies & pockets.
I don't know who that is but best believe anyone carrying that optimism around especially seeing the downward spiral we've embarked on since 2023 and still showing funny optimism, the person is either shielded from the Nigerian reality or benefitting from it.
16+ years into an insurgency against an enemy whose primary weapon is the IED, yet troops are still being sent into the fight in soft-skinned, non armoured vehicles and expected to clear IEDs without adequate EOD equipment, mine resistant vehicles, or modern detection syste
The military authority and civilian oversight keep using poor soldiers as disposable body bags. .
We also hold the position for highest maternal mortality rate in the world
Highest Under five mortality rate in the world
Highest out of school children in the world
Highest mosquito related deaths in the world
Let that sink in...
