Topic: Religious Identity vs. Secularism in Yorubaland: ISI as a Case Study
Speaker: Oladimeji Bolarinwa
Recent developments at International School Ibadan (ISI) have reignited important conversations about religious expression, equal treatment, and the place of secularism in public educational institutions.
Following legal disputes over the wearing of religious symbols and the broader implications for students of different faiths, this discussion will examine the delicate balance between individual religious rights and the principle of neutrality in shared public spaces.
Tonight's discussion will explore:
- What secularism means in a plural society
- Religious freedom and equal treatment under the law
- The ISI case and its implications for public schools
- How diversity can be managed while preserving fairness and social cohesion in Yorubaland
How should public institutions balance religious expression with the need for neutrality, equality, and unity?

I studied in a prestigious university in Germany built on Christian philosophy and principles with classmates from Jordan, Iraq and Syria with hijab on their heads.
We competed well and did well for ourselves.
Go to Harvard and Yale and see hijabites breaking boundaries.
Hijab is part and parcel of human rights of any female Muslim who wishes to do so.
ISI is a secular institution not Christian or Muslim therefore young girls must not be denied the right to put on hijab in such an environment.
I am too exposed to pander to sentiments and societal bias.
We shouldn’t allow radicals and extremists turn us into “religiousphobes”.

This is the Wife of one of our Yoruba leaders in Yoruba land. She is not a Yoruba woman but assimilated completely into the Yoruba culture that she is representing Nigeria as an Ambassador via the Oyo state slot. Now compare this with that Alagbako married by one of our leaders in Ondo State.
Dear Yoruba men, if you aren’t going to marry a Yoruba woman, marry a woman of virtue

Did you know that SEGILOLA GOLD MINE produced 91,910 ounces of gold in Osun state in 2025?
Federal government got 5% as share, while Osun state Osun state 13% derivation
This simply means ; federal government got 4,600 oz as share, while Osun state got 11,948 oz as derivation
The current price of gold per ounce as of July 6 2026(today) is $4,175
Therefore: Osun state received 11,948 oz x $4,175 = $49,882,900( N70,000,000,000) in 2025
The question is, where did the money go to? who and who benefited from the money?
Can Osun State government point out projects embarked in both Atakunmosa East and Atakunmosa west Local Government Areas through the 13% DERIVATION earned from the Gold mining ?
These local government areas don’t have;
Good water
Good road network
Good schools
Good health centers
Stable power supply
As we’re talking and criticising the Niger Delta politicians mismanagement of 13% derivation on crude oil, we should talk about huge percentage Osun state government earning from Gold mining too. AU

Telling young Yoruba Muslim girls not to wear their hijab in a secular private school is a form of discrimination and harassment.
It is uncalled for and the highest form of religious intolerance.
Discriminating against young girls because of Hijab is a form of hate crime.
The truth must be said!

Crowned Queen of Kings in 1917, she continued her father’s legacy when leadership was often reserved for men.

Yorùbá culture is truly unique and deeply rooted in respect for elders.
This is why Afrobeat star Fireboy DML prostrated to greet veteran musician Lágbájá, despite being one of the biggest artistes of his generation. In Yorùbá tradition, showing respect to elders is a core value that transcends fame, status, or age.
We are taught to honour our parents and elders, and simple acts such as prostrating in greeting reflect the values of humility, discipline, and respect. Many believe these cultural principles have contributed to the relative peace, order, and strong sense of community found in Yorùbá society.
Akara does not need a marketing team. It sells itself before 7am, before the oil has even settled. Ground beans, patience and fire, turned into something people will queue for under the sun and in the rain. Yoruba street food does not compete. It just wins.
