Every time I see the pictures from the Afriland Towers fire in Lagos, I can’t help but think: that could have been any of us—or our family and friends.

At least ten precious lives were reportedly lost. Ten people with dreams, hopes, and families—just like you and I.

It’s important to pause from the rush of life and absorb tragedies like this—without turning them into political fodder. I believe our deaths may be predestined, but I also believe we must pause, commiserate, condole, and ask: What could have been done differently? What lessons will prevent a recurrence?

As Nigeria builds more high-rises, we must take safety seriously—at home, in our markets, in our workplaces. Fires may happen, but we should never become desensitized. Each tragedy must awaken in us a resolve to prioritize safety: in our designs, our orientation, our drills, and our emergency procedures.

My heart goes out to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who died. May God comfort them—and may we, the living, be grateful for each day, and courageous enough to build a safer society for all.
