The Foreword.
FOREWORD
In this digital age, where technology and globalization have become the world’s driving force, it has become imperative and important for us to learn from others by reading their memoirs as
well. When I was approached by my fellow ex-Navy boy, Toba Olamilokun that I have been chosen by my former Commandant to write a foreword to his book, I was pleasantly surprised. Why me?
To write a foreword on Commodore SEA Olamilokun’s book on leadership, was a rare honour because for me, this is the great disciplinarian that shaped my life as well as hundreds of others since the early 90s, positioning us appropriately for the roles we play in today’s local and international societies. I am very grateful to him. At his retirement party held at the OPIC Hall in Lagos a decade ago, I remember how everyone at the event including all ex-Navy boys present, applauded and recognized that Commodore SEA Olamilokun deserved all the acknowledgement and respect for imparting in us what discipline and leadership was all about.
Over the past 26 years, I have known the author as an articulate, disciplined, extremely neat and hardworking senior officer of the Nigerian Navy who displayed uncommon passion for ICT at various cadres of learning. In the Nigerian Navy, he did not only teach Mathematics as a subject but practiced the use of ICT as well as teaching it in all his appointments. I am glad that, even in retirement, he still finds time to write and I commend him for publishing this work.
The different sections of this book will provide readers with tenets of leadership and what it means to create a solid foundation for an entity to thrive and succeed. In addition, it will challenge us all on the need to record our experiences through writing for posterity. I read somewhere that good readers are good leaders. What about good writers? I think they are exceptional leaders. We must cultivate the habit of reading and writing in order to build the Nigeria of our dreams.

Give us Good Roads.

Governance is about the provision of quality life for the common good of those governed. One of the evidences of good Governance and the benefits of democracy is the provision of good roads. There is no excuse for failure in this.

Have you traveled between Ibadan and Ife in recent times? That road is a shame to those who govern. The traffic on that road, understandably, is very high. The road leads to Ife and other major cities. Some portions of that road are so bad that drivers going as far as Akure, Okene, Lokoja, Kaduna and other northern cities spend quality time here negotiating potholes. What is wrong with our governments?

As a young person I had traveled far and wide in this country and I had noticed the presence of of Men of the Public Works Department PWD on our roads doing the continuous work of maintenence. These staff of Ministry of Works resided on the road networks in Nigeria and provided quality maintenance on all roads. With a foreman, a section of the road was allocated to a team. Can we just go back to this system or adapt our #FERMA to perform the same function?

I'm not against having coastal road or Lagos - Sokoto ROAD. Roads, apart from linking up cities also open up places. We should not abandon our existing roads in the name of creating new ones.

I visited a city in the South West very recently. This is a city I have been visiting since I was a small boy. The network of roads in that city, many of them dual carriage, should give hope to all Nigerians who believe in this country. The transformation of roads in that city is salutary. Almost all the roads in that city are well tarred now. If the government of Ondo State can replicate the style of roads in Owo at major cities in that state then the citizens have started receiving the dividends of democracy. I am aware that Akure to Owo is a Federal ROAD but that shouldn't be a plausible reason for the state to abandon that portion.

As we move into the year 2025, good governments around the country should, please, emulate the Owo town's transformation. If there are roads linking the cities in your domain it is also your responsibility so don't wait for the federal might. There used to be a state in the south south with good road networks in those days. It was the Bendel State. From Sabongida Ora to Afuze, you could select from 3 good roads to pass. Many of those roads are very bad now. If you don't maintain what you have they will go bad. Bi okunrin ri ejo, ti obirin PA, ki ejo saa ti ku. Those who govern us must justify the confidence we repose in them. Oba to je, ti aiye gun rege, Oruko re ko ni parun. National and subnational Governance should repair our roads to improve our economy and provide effective security. As we prepare to crossover to the Year of Fulfillment of Hope, 2025, we plead with those who govern us to give us Good roads.
